Unusually for a Palaeolithic cave, the Grotta di Cala dei Genovesi on the island of Levanzo, off the west coast of Sicily, Italy, has yielded evidence of both parietal and mobiliary art.

At the same time, stylistic comparison of the parietal art at Grotta di Cala dei Genovesi with other broadly contemporaneous sites that demonstrate well-documented cave art allows a relative chronology to be proposed.

Its discovery in 1949 and publication marked a turning point in the history of rock art studies in Italy and gave the start to a great season of new finds in other caves and shelters of Sicily and a general growing interest for pre Historic art.

But despite the efforts of few, this interest gradually declined over the course of the years.

The questions posed were how better to evaluate the surfaces of the artefacts, with regard to whether the surfaces were processed or natural, and with the engraved examples to differentiate between natural or man-made origins, and even to identify different handworkers.
